More on Emma

Are Emma's efforts to improve the lives of those around her praiseworthy or blameworthy?

If Praiseworthy: what makes someone an authority on what will make others happy?

If Blameworthy: why shouldn't we do our best to help others?

Blame worthy. Emma didn't have the skills needed to do the job properly, so she shouldn't have meddled. She was always obsessed with class distinctions when it was convenient, but disregarded them totally when it came to matching Harriet with all those classy boys.
I do believe that people should try to help each other, that's why I blame Emma for doing the opposite. She lacked the self awareness necessary for effective meddling. If Emma had meddled more competently, I would praise her for it. Results matter (still).
In Emma's case, the best result would have come about if she had just minded her own business! Analogous situation: I break my finger by slamming it in the car door. My dear friend, anxious to help and knowing that I have meager funds (college kid that I am) assures me that she can set the break for me. My finger heals, is crooked, and I have to go in for a painful and costly fix with a real doctor. In retrospect, I wish she hadn't tried to help, but had she known what she was doing, it could have worked out great...

I think Emma truly means well. She has people's best interests at heart. She's just not the brightest bulb in the box. However, I agree with Hannah by saying that she ought to have left well enough alone. Her actions are blameworthy even though her intentions were good.

Sorry about the lateness... I don't think that Emma was truly trying to help others when she did her matchmaking. I think that she was extremely bored and needed something to entertain her. She never stopped to think about what her victims wanted (Harriet, for example). Instead, she molded things into her game to make it all work out. And, in the end when things didn't work out, she was more upset by her stupidity and failure than by the pain she might have caused others. She was more concerned with her success in her own game than her poor friends.

So I guess that would make her blameworthy. I think that if you're going to do something, you have to do it for the right motives.

Ashley's going all TS Eliot.

Why would it be so bad if Emma's boredom resulted in happy marriages for all.

AKA the right thing for the wrong reason.

I just don't understand why that would be bad!!!
