Step 2: The Obvious First Question

So, what did you think about Emma?

It was OK. I really wanted to punch her most of the time. However, she did grow on me despite how obnoxious I initially thought she was. I moved from wanting to be violent to just shaking my head in amusement. But she still married Knightley. And he's old. That's pretty gross.

Oh and Mackenzie,
She does NOT remind me of you...at all.

Knightley was definitely the best character. And so what if he's old... age is just a number! Emma had some serious issues. Easy to be pissed off with her, though if I had nothing else to do, I can see myself doing a lot of the stupid things she does. I really wish the Mr. Woodhouse didn't exist. He's such a downer! I would have gotten the heck out of his house!

ok, well, in short, i didn't like Emma at all. Do away with the social propriety and the passive agressive behavior and you have a completely empty book. Emma was not a likeable character and I really think Knightly could have done better (not that he was that great either). I think I will read Pride and Prejudice and that's about it. (oh, by the way, i'm in London...)!

AGE IS NOT JUST A NUMBER HANNAH!!! DON'T YOU DARE USE JANE AUSTEN TO JUSTIFY TREVOR OR WHATEVER OLD GUY YOU ARE CURRENTLY "DATING"!!!! Mr. Woodhouse reminds me sooooo much of my father. But I don't think ANYONE in my family is like Emma.

Well... I like Emma. Shocking, huh?

While it's not my fav Jane Austen novel, I really like Emma. Many of the characters are obnoxious at times, but they are (in my opinion) portrayed perfectly. I mean, can you imagine a more boring speaker than Ms. Bates? I also really like the plot, it definitely surprised me a few times when I read the book for the first time (I was 11 - don't judge), and I still think it's quite cleverly done. AND, I like Emmma, the character. I'm not exactly sure why, I just do.

More importantly, I like Ms. Austen's argument as well. (Or at least what I think her argument is) I feel like she is essentially telling her audience that people should be decent to one another, not meddle in other people's business, be honest, and care. I like that.

also, without Emma, there would be no Clueless. Tragic.
